Biologically inspired information-theoretical methods for optimal signal transmission, Funded by ERS interdisciplinary Pathfinder Project, RWTH Aachen (2011)

The aim of this project was the information theoretical investigation of a biologically inspired parallel transmission of signals over several noisy channels. In a three-step approach, the noisy transmission, the lossy quantization and finally the information fusion of the quantized data were investigated. Capacity studies provided information on system performance and the effect of stochastic resonance. This is the effect that the addition of noise can improve the detection of weak signals during parallel transmission. Various information fusion functions were analyzed.
